Sponge or Spatterware has been around since before the 16th century. Typlically the Spatterware style was from England, heavily collected in the early 1800s in PA, and has a picture in the center (like a bird or a fruit) whereas the Sponge style is just a two (sometimes three) color spattered on the dish (hence why the two styles are frequently misnamed and the names have become interchangeable). It appears as though the blue spongeware was most popular in the USA around the 1880s; however, it became popular again in the 1950s and 60s when collectors started buying up the pieces.
